What happened
On September 13, 2023, at approximately 15:31 UTC, an Extra EA300/LC departed from Graz Airport (LOWG) bound for Ptuj, Slovenia. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported an engine power loss over the radio. Unable to maintain altitude due to the declining performance, the pilot decided to perform an emergency landing in a nearby meadow.
During the approach to the landing site, the pilot identified a line of trees obstructing the intended path. In an attempt to clear the obstacle, the pilot applied back pressure on the elevator to fly over the trees. This maneuver resulted in an aerodynamic stall, causing the aircraft to crash into the field. The pilot sustained serious injuries during the impact.
The investigation
The Austrian Federal Safety Investigation Board (SUB) conducted an investigation into the accident, examining the aircraft's wreckage, engine components, and flight data. Investigators analyzed data from an onboard MVP-50 engine monitor and a Garmin GTN 750 unit to reconstruct the flight path and engine parameters. The investigation included a technical examination of the Lycoming AEIO-580-B1A engine, specifically inspecting the crankshaft, connecting rods, and bearing shells. The investigation also reviewed the aircraft's weight and balance, which were found to be within limits, as well as the prevailing weather conditions at the time of the accident.
