What happened
On July 9, 2006, at approximately 07:44 local time, an Airbus A310-3 and24, registration F-OGYP, was performing a landing at Irkutsk airport. During the landing roll, the aircraft ran down the runway and overran the threshold. The aircraft traveled approximately 2140 meters from the aerodrome reference point at a magnetic azimuth of 296°, where it collided with barriers. The impact caused the aircraft to break apart and subsequently burst into flames.
The accident resulted in 125 fatalities, including both pilots and three members of the cabin crew. Additionally, 60 passengers and three cabin crew members sustained physical injuries of varying severity.
The investigation
The investigation was conducted by a commission appointed by the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC). The inquiry examined various technical and operational aspects, including the aircraft's maintenance history, flight recorder data, and the performance of the engine control computers (FADEC). The investigation also looked into the physical characteristics of the runway, the friction coefficient of the surface, and the effectiveness of the airport's emergency and rescue equipment. Furthermore, the commission reviewed the training standards for flight crews and the procedures for managing aircraft weight and balance.
