What happened
On 30 May 2010, a P&M Aviation Ltd Quik GT450, registration G-RAYB, was conducting a private flight when the engine ceased operation during its approach to Runway 31 at Abbeville Airfield, France. The weather conditions at the time were characterized by visibility of 25 km, scattered clouds at 4,000 ft, and gusty winds ranging from 5 kt to 15 kt.
As the aircraft neared the ground, the pilot experienced a sudden change in wind direction. The pilot reported that just prior to touchdown, the wind appeared to lift the left wing, inducing a slight turn. The aircraft subsequently touched down with a rightward drift and proceeded to turn over onto its right side.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. The examination focused on the sequence of the engine failure and the aerodynamic effects of the wind during the final moments of the flight. The investigation established that the aircraft sustained significant damage to the trike, forks, propeller, engine mount, and wing during the rollover.
Findings
- The engine stopped functioning during the approach to the runway.
- A sudden gust of wind lifted the left wing immediately before touchdown.
- The aircraft landed with a rightward drift, leading to the rollover.
