What happened
On a private flight originating from Sligo Airport, a twin engine airplane was en route to Béziers when the flight was interrupted. At approximately 11:21 local time, while maintaining a cruising altitude of 10,900 feet above the Celtic Sea, the pilot encountered an unforeseen issue that necessitated a change in plans. Consequently, the aircraft was authorized to divert to Waterford Airport.
During the descent and subsequent approach to runway 03, the pilot lost control of the aircraft. The plane impacted a field situated south of the airfield. The impact forces were severe enough to result in the total destruction of the twin engine airplane. There was one fatality involving the pilot, who was the only person on board the aircraft at the time of the crash.
Findings
While the specific nature of the initial unexpected situation was not detailed, the sequence of events indicates that the loss of control occurred during the final approach phase of the flight.
