What happened
On 26 May 2013, a Pegasus Quantum 15, registration G-MYNO, was conducting a private flight from Harringe airfield in Kent toward a grass airstrip located approximately 6 nautical miles north-west of Rye, East Sussex. During the approach to Runway 20, the pilot encountered turbulence, which necessitated two separate go-arounds.
On the third attempt, the pilot successfully landed the aircraft. However, following the touchdown, a gust of wind caught the microlight, forcing it to the left. This lateral movement caused the aircraft to collide with a wire fence, where it came to an abrupt stop. The pilot sustained minor injuries, and the aircraft suffered damage to its wing fabric, propeller, pod, and landing gear.
The investigation
The investigation examined the flight conditions and the physical characteristics of the airfield. The airstrip, oriented 02/20, was noted to be narrow and bordered by trees and fencing. At the time of the accident, the pilot reported a light northerly surface wind that had become more westerly and gusty during the approach. The investigation reviewed the pilot's experience and the sequence of events leading from the landing to the impact with the fence.
