What happened

On 6 July 2013, a Pegasus Quik, registration G-CBZT, was conducting a private flight along the Northumberland coast. After an initial northbound leg, the pilot began the return journey to Eshott Airfield. During this period, the pilot observed a significant and unexpected increase in wind strength, accompanied by turbulence likely generated by the Cheviot Hills.

Upon arriving at the airfield, the pilot identified a west-north-west wind of 10 mph, gusting to 23 mph. To facilitate a landing into the wind, the pilot opted to use a cropped area on the northeast side of the disused portion of the airfield. The approach sequence involved three attempts. The first approach was an overhead rejoin for Runway 26, which was abandoned due to turbulence. The second approach also required a go-around because of the difficulty in maintaining control of the aircraft amidst the unstable air.

During the third and final approach, the aircraft encountered severe turbulence at an altitude between 50 ft and 200 ft. At a height of approximately 10 to 15 ft, the aircraft entered a stall, causing the left wing to strike the ground. The impact resulted in damage to the wing, the nose landing gear, and the propeller. The pilot escaped the wreckage without injury.
