Microlight aircraft skids and tips during landing in Northamptonshire

Casualties unknown • Lower Boddington, Northants, GB

A Pegasus Quik microlight aircraft sustained damage after the pilot attempted to steer and brake at high speed following a deep landing in a field.

What happened

On 11 June 2006, a Pegasus Quik microlight, registration G-FLEX, was conducting a private flight from Hanney, Oxfordshire, to Lower Boddington, Northamptonshire. The pilot intended to land in a friend's field. After performing a standard circuit and approach, the aircraft touched down further into the field than originally planned.

Upon encountering an area of downward slope, the pilot applied heavy braking while simultaneously attempting to steer the aircraft toward the corner of the field. This maneuver, performed while the aircraft was still traveling at a high rate of speed, caused the aircraft to skid and tip onto its wing. The aircraft eventually came to a stop on its wheels, resulting in damage to the kingpost and fuselage fairings. There were no injuries to the pilot.

The investigation

The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. Investigators reviewed the sequence of events leading to the loss of control on the ground and assessed the pilot's actions during the landing phase.

Probable cause

The accident resulted from the pilot's decision not to perform a go-around after an unintended deep landing, combined with an attempt to steer and brake the aircraft at high speed on a slope.
