What happened
On June 14, 2008, at 12:35 PM, an amateur-built MG 03 « Harmattan», registration F-PYZK, crashed during a flight training session at Castres Aerodrome. The flight was part of a rehearsal for a simulated air race intended for a large-scale public event. The flight pattern had been modified for this specific event, utilizing a 4,000-meter circuit marked by brightly colored pylons, with a flight altitude increased to 160 feet and a right-hand turn direction.
The pilot began the training session at 12:25 PM, intending to complete six laps. According to witnesses, during the final lap while flying along a straight section of the circuit at approximately 200 feet, the aircraft pitched up slightly, performed two rolls around the longitudinal axis, and then dived toward the ground. The aircraft struck the ground and caught fire.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the mechanical condition of the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the flight. Examination of the wreckage confirmed that the engine was delivering power and that all control surfaces remained connected to the cockpit controls. No mechanical malfunctions were identified. The pilot was found secured in his seat with the five-point harness properly positioned. A medical review of the pilot found no underlying pathologies that could have contributed to the accident.
Investigators also reviewed the pilot's recent flight history and the preparation for the event. Findings
