What happened
On 1 September 2011, a Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub, registration G-BIDK, was conducting a training flight at Cranfield Airport in Bedfordshire. During an approach to Runway 21, which featured an 8 kt crosswind from the left, the aircraft experienced a difficult touchdown. The aircraft initially made contact with the runway on its left wheel and underwent a slight bounce before the second contact with the ground was described as firm.
Following this second impact, the aircraft entered a ground loop. During the maneuver, the left tyre burst, leading to a loss of directional control. The aircraft yawed approximately 90 degrees to the right. This sequence of events resulted in the left wing tip striking the ground, causing damage to the left wing spar, the left main wheel, and the tyre. There were no injuries to the two crew members on board.
The investigation
Investigators reviewed the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. The investigation clarified the positioning of the crew, confirming that the handling pilot, who was under instruction, was seated in the front seat of the aircraft during the approach.
