Correction issued regarding Northside landing strip gradient in 2008 Piper Tri-Pacer accident

Casualties unknown • Northside, 5 miles SW of Aberdeen, GB

The AAIB has issued a correction to a previous report concerning the gradient of the landing strip at Northside following an accident involving a Piper PA-22-160 Tri-Pacer.

What happened

On 18 May 2008, a Piper PA-22-160 Tri-Pacer, registered G-ARDT, was involved in an accident at Northside, located approximately 5 miles southwest of Aberdeen. The incident occurred at 12:30 UTC.

The investigation

During the review of the investigation findings, a discrepancy was identified regarding the physical characteristics of the landing strip at the Northside site. The initial AAIB report (Bulletin 8/2008) incorrectly described the topography of the airfield.

Findings

It was established that the original description of the landing strip's gradient was inaccurate. While the initial report suggested that the centre and southern sections of the strip sloped upwards towards the south at an angle of approximately 6° to the horizontal, the actual measurement was significantly steeper. The investigation confirmed that the centre and southern portions of the strip actually sloped upwards towards the south at an angle of approximately 25° to the horizontal.

Probable cause

The AAIB issued a correction to clarify that the landing strip at Northside featured a much steeper upward gradient than previously reported.
