What happened
A night flight originating from Valetta Airport, Malta, was en route to Milan-Linate Airport when the accident occurred. The aircraft, a twin engine plane, was operated with a crew consisting of one pilot and one passenger. While traversing the Gulf of Genoa, the flight maintained an altitude of 21,000 feet after passing Elba Island.
During the flight, the aircraft moved east of its intended flight path, failing to pass over Genoa as required by the flight plan. Shortly after this deviation, the aircraft began an uncontrolled descent. The plane eventually struck wooded, hilly terrain in the vicinity of Cassano di Centenaro, situated approximately 43 km southwest of Piacenza. The impact caused the aircraft to disintegrate, and the crash resulted in two fatalities.
Findings
- The aircraft deviated from its prescribed route toward the east.
- The flight was unable to maintain its intended trajectory over Genoa prior to the descent.
