Taxiing Collision Involving Pitts S-2A at Redhill Aerodrome

Casualties unknown • Redhill Aerodrome, Surrey, GB

A Pitts S-2A aircraft struck an aerodrome marker board while taxiing at Redhill Aerodrome, following a series of similar incidents at the same location.

What happened

On 25 June 2006, a Pitts S-2A, registration G-TIII, was taxiing at Redhill Aerodrome following a landing on Runway 08L. After being cleared to vacate the runway to the left and proceed to the 'A3' hold, the pilot began taxiing in a northerly direction. This route required crossing the grass area to the west to reach the parking area. During the maneuver, the aircraft struck the 'G3' marker board, which serves as the hold position indicator for Runway 18.

As the aircraft moved, the pilot attempted to weave the plane to avoid the small, 12-inch high frangible posts. However, the collision occurred, resulting in no injuries to the crew but causing damage to the aircraft's propeller, the underside of the fuselage, and the engine, which sustained a shockload. The marker board itself was also damaged.

The investigation

The investigation established that the pilot was familiar with the location of the board and understood the responsibility to maintain a clear taxi route. However, the pilot noted that the board was positioned 'end-on' relative to the approach direction, making it difficult to see. Furthermore, the visual background—consisting of hangars, helicopters, and other parked aircraft—further obscured the small posts.

Investigators noted that this was the third accident involving tailwheel aircraft striking this specific marker board since November 2005. The investigation highlighted a recurring issue with the visibility and position of the 'G3' board.

Probable cause

The collision was caused by the poor conspicuity of the aerodrome marker board, which was difficult to detect due to its orientation and a cluttered visual background.
