What happened
On November 27, 1995, an EMB-712 aircraft, registration PT-VFJ, departed from Santa Maria (SSKG) bound for Sidrolândia, Mato Grosso do Sul. The pilot attempted a visual approach to a dirt landing strip at the Jockey Clube, which is an uncertified airfield.
Prior to the final approach, the pilot performed a low pass over the runway to inspect the surface for holes caused by animals. During the subsequent final approach, the aircraft's propeller struck low-voltage power lines that crossed the approach path perpendicularly. This impact caused the aircraft to strike the ground forcefully, sliding approximately 30 meters along the dirt surface. Following the impact, a fire broke out in the left wing, eventually consuming the entire aircraft. The pilot sustained serious injuries, while the passenger suffered minor injuries.
The investigation
CENIPA's investigation established that the pilot was operating the aircraft with an expired Technical Flight Certificate (CHT), although his medical certificate was valid. The investigation noted that the pilot had previously landed at this specific location.
Investigators examined the pilot's psychological state and operational decisions, noting that the presence of a close childhood friend on board contributed to a state of euphoria that likely reduced the pilot's level of attention. Furthermore, the investigation found that the pilot's focus on inspecting the runway surface for hazards led to a failure to identify the overhead electrical obstacles.
