What happened
On 6 July 2010, a Rans S6-ESD Coyote II, registration G-MYDK, was conducting a private flight departing from Bockenfield, Northumberland. During the takeoff roll on Runway 26, the pilot noted that the aircraft's rate of climb appeared lower than usual. Upon reaching an altitude of 250 ft agl, the pilot executed a 90-degree right turn. At this stage, the engine suffered a sudden loss of power.
Following the power loss, the pilot attempted to maneuver the aircraft away from a perimeter fence located at the far end of the airfield. While the pilot successfully diverted the aircraft's path, the aircraft continued running toward the fence, ultimately causing the nosewheel to buckle before the aircraft came to a complete stop. There were no injuries to the pilot during the incident.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. Investigators reviewed the flight conditions, noting a wind from 270º at 10 to 12 kt, a temperature of 17ºC, and visibility of 20 km with scattered clouds at 3,000 ft amsl. The investigation focused on the sequence of events following the engine's failure and the subsequent ground excursion.
