What happened
On 27 August 2013, a modified Rans S6-ESD Coyote II, registration G-MYUZ, was performing a private flight at Sandown Airport, Isle of Wight. During the landing phase on Runway 23, the aircraft touched down on the grassland portion of the runway on a heading of approximately 050º.
Following the touchdown, the aircraft began to veer toward the right of the runway centerline. In an effort to execute a go-around, the pilot applied full engine power. However, during this maneuver, the right wing dropped, causing the aircraft to depart the side of the runway. The aircraft subsequently crossed an adjacent grass taxiway and came to a halt in an area of rough terrain. The aircraft sustained damage to the propeller, wings, engine housing, cabin, elevator, and landing gear. There were no injuries to the pilot or the single passenger on board.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. Investigators noted that the final position of the aircraft was approximately 450 m from nearby buildings and roughly 80 m to the right of the runway centerline. At the time of the occurrence, wind conditions were reported as light and variable. The pilot indicated uncertainty regarding the specific cause of the loss of control during the application of power.
