What happened
On 1 November 2010, a Renegade Spirit UK microlight, registration G-MYFM, was conducting a private flight at a farm strip located in London Colney, Hertfordshire. The aircraft, powered by a single Rotax 582 engine, was attempting to land on a 325-metre grass runway.
During the landing sequence, the pilot overshot the runway and subsequently initiated a go-around procedure. During this maneuver, the aircraft's landing gear made contact with the top of a hedge. This impact caused the aircraft to strike the ground in a field beyond the airfield, resulting in damage to the wings and the landing gear. There were no injuries to the pilot during the incident.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. The examination focused on the sequence of events during the landing attempt and the subsequent go-around maneuver. The pilot's own assessment of the event identified the primary cause as pilot error.
