What happened
On 16 July 2000, a Replica Sopwith Dove, registration G-EAGA, was performing a private flight when it arrived at Andrewsfield Aerodrome in Essex. The aircraft landed on Runway 27 under conditions of light northern winds. As the aircraft decelerated along the runway, it began to veer toward the right. In an attempt to correct the directional deviation, the pilot applied a brief burst of engine power. This action resulted in the collapse of the left main landing gear, causing the aircraft to pitch forward onto its nose.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. The examination focused on the sequence of events following the touchdown and the mechanical failure of the landing gear. The aircraft, which is powered by a single 80 HP Le Rhone piston engine, sustained damage to the propeller, the engine cowling, and the left main landing gear assembly. The pilot, who held a Private Pilot's Licence and had 697 total flying hours, was uninjured during the incident.
