What happened
On 16 September 2006, a Robinson R44 Raven, registration G-GGRH, departed from a private landing site near Strathaven for a flight to the Mull of Kintyre. The pilot, who was flying with one passenger, had been waiting for fog to clear at a nearby airfield before performing a local visual assessment of the weather. Believing conditions were suitable, the crew took off at approximately 1000 hrs.
While climbing through 500 feet, the helicopter entered cloud. To regain visual references, the pilot initiated a descent. Upon regaining contact with the ground, the pilot determined that the weather was no longer suitable for the intended flight and decided to perform a precautionary landing in a field roughly 2 nm from the departure point. During this landing attempt, the pilot failed to see a hedgerow containing trees due to the low visibility. The main rotor blades struck two trees, causing the helicopter to undergo structural disintegration. The aircraft came to rest on its side, and both the crew and passenger escaped the wreckage with minor injuries.
The investigation
Investigators examined the weather conditions in the area leading up to the accident. While reports from Prestwick Airport indicated good visibility and no significant cloud, synoptic charts and actual weather reports showed a moist, low-level easterly flow moving through the Scottish Borders and the Forth-Clyde valley. This flow was bringing low cloud, mist, and hill fog into the Strathaven area. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's reliance on local visual observations and airport reports from a location 20 nm away to determine flight suitability.
Findings
- The pilot relied on personal observations and reports from Prestwick Airport, which could not accurately reflect the weather conditions further west.
- The pilot lacked the necessary training to operate under instrument flight rules once the aircraft entered cloud.
- The primary cause was the insufficient visibility for flight by visual references, which prevented the pilot from seeing the hedgerow and trees during the landing attempt.
