What happened
On 2 November 2001, a Rotorway Executive 90, registration G-BUJZ, was involved in an accident near Purleigh, Essex. The flight, which was a private operation, had traveled from Stansted to a grass landing site. After remaining on the ground for approximately 45 minutes, the pilot and one passenger prepared for departure. At the time of takeoff, the aircraft was operating near its maximum allowable takeoff weight.
Immediately following lift-off, the helicopter experienced a loss of altitude, descending until it struck the ground forcefully on one of its skids. The impact caused the aircraft to to an onto its right side. The impact resulted in the rotor blades bending in half, damage to the fuselage, and a broken canopy. Both the pilot and the passenger escaped the aircraft without injury; the pilot exited through the damaged canopy while the passenger used the left door.
The investigation
Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the departure from the grass landing site. The pilot reported that the ground surface was well-maintained and firm. The investigation also considered the aircraft's weight and configuration at the time of the incident. The pilot noted that there were no mechanical faults identified with the aircraft itself.
