What happened
On 22 October 2002, a Cessna 172M, registered ZS-MDF, was conducting circuit training at Worcester Aerodrome (FAWC). The pilot, who had recently completed a type re-clearance, was performing various maneuvers, including stalls and steep turns, in the General Flying Area prior to beginning circuit practice.
While performing the second circuit of the session, the pilot experienced a bounce during the landing phase. In response to the bounce, the pilot applied full throttle and executed a go-around, successfully completing the circuit without further incident.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the condition of the aircraft following the landing. A post-flight inspection of ZS-MOL revealed a significant leak in the nose wheel oleo strut. As a result of this finding, the aircraft was immediately withdrawn from service to await a detailed inspection by an Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO).
Records indicated that the aircraft had been properly maintained, having flown only 52.3 hours since its last Maintenance Period Inspection (MPI). The pilot held a valid private license with the appropriate type endorsement and a valid medical certificate.
Findings
- The primary cause of the mechanical issue was that the pilot allowed the aircraft to bounce during the landing phase of the second circuit.
- The impact from the bounce resulted in a significant leak in the nose wheel oleo strut.
- Meteorological conditions at the time were favorable, with good visibility, no cloud, and light, variable winds.
