What happened
On December 24, 2022, a Reims Cessna F172M Skyhawk, registration ZS-PYL, was conducting a private flight from Grand Central Aerodrome in Gauteng to the Zebula Lodge Estate Airstrip in Limpopo. The aircraft was carrying a pilot and two passengers.
During the approach to Runway 26, the aircraft floated just above the runway surface. In an attempt to abort the landing, the pilot applied full throttle to execute a go-around. However, the aircraft failed to climb as expected. The pilot subsequently closed the throttle, leading to a hard touchdown approximately two-thirds down the runway. Following the impact, the pilot applied heavy braking, causing the aircraft to skid and veer off the movement area into nearby trees. While the aircraft suffered substantial damage, there were no injuries to the occupants.
The investigation
SACAA AIID investigators examined the wreckage and the aircraft's digital engine records. Analysis of the FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) data showed that engine parameters, including fuel and manifold pressure, were normal during the final segment of the flight. There was no evidence of an impending engine failure or power loss.
The investigation also reviewed the aircraft's maintenance history, finding that all required inspections were up to date and the aircraft was within its weight and balance limits for takeoff. The pilot's credentials, including a valid Private Pilot Licence and medical certificate, were also confirmed to be in order.
