Engine Failure Leads to Forced Landing and Injuries in Limpopo

Casualties unknown • On a field, approximately 1.2 nautical miles south-west of PR Mphephu Aerodrome in Levubu area, ZA

A Jabiru J430 aircraft sustained heavy damage during an emergency landing in Levubu after a mechanical failure caused the engine to stop.

What happened

On the morning of 23 March 2025, a Jabiru J430 aircraft, registered ZU-MJM, was performing a private flight from R100 Nandoni airstrip toward Louis Trichardt Aerodrome. While cruising near PR Mphephu Aerodrome, the pilot noticed the engine running roughly. In an attempt to mitigate potential carburettor icing, the pilot applied carburettor heat and attempted to divert to a nearby runway. However, the pilot identified trees obstructing the approach path, and shortly thereafter, the engine ceased operation entirely.

After unsuccessful attempts to restart the engine, the pilot executed a forced landing in a field within the Levubu residential area. During the descent, the aircraft struck a tree with its left wing tip and horizontal stabilizer. The impact, which also involved the right wing and landing gear, resulted in the destruction of the aircraft. The pilot and one passenger sustained serious injuries, while a second passenger suffered minor injuries.

Probable cause

The engine stopped due to a fatigue fracture in the number 6 cylinder exhaust valve at the collet groove area, which led to an unsuccessful forced landing.
