What happened
On 19 June 1999, at approximately 14:00Z, a Cessna 172, registered ZS-JTC, was conducting training maneuvers at Vereeniging Aerodrome (FAVV). While the student pilot was performing circuit patterns to consolidate training, the aircraft's engine began experiencing severe vibrations and a subsequent loss of power. After declaring an emergency, the pilot executed a forced landing in a ploughed field located approximately 2 nautical miles north of runway 21. There were no injuries to the occupants, and the aircraft sustained only minor damage to the spinner and propeller.
The investigation
SACAA AIID investigators examined the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the power loss. During the post-accident inspection, the engine was successfully restarted two days after the occurrence. Although the engine initially exhibited minor running issues, these resolved quickly, and the powerplant continued to operate normally without further complications.
Findings
- The primary cause of the engine failure was identified as carburettor icing.
- Weather conditions at the time of the incident were reported as fine.
- The aircraft was being operated for training purposes by a student pilot with 19.7 total flying hours.
