What happened
On 4 July 2000, a Beech B58P, registered as ZS-KMZ, was conducting a private flight under IFR day conditions. The flight originated from Lanseria Airport with the intention of landing at a private airstrip located near Tambotie Lodge in the Ellisras district.
As the aircraft approached the destination airstrip, the pilot encountered difficulties during the landing phase. The aircraft subsequently experienced a loss of control, leading to an impact that caused substantial damage to the airframe. Despite the severity of the impact, there were zero fatalities and zero injuries among the three occupants on board.
The investigation
SACAA AIID investigators examined the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the flight. The investigation confirmed that the weather conditions at the time of the accident were fine. The pilot held a valid commercial license and a medical certificate without restrictions, with 20 hours of experience on this specific aircraft type.
Technical inspections of the aircraft revealed that all engine and flight controls were fully serviceable prior to the occurrence. Maintenance records indicated that the aircraft's last major periodic inspection (MPI) had been completed on 26 May 2000, with only 21.4 flying hours logged since that service.
