What happened
On 28 May 2001, a private flight departed from Morning Star Flight Park with the intention of landing at Bombay. Shortly after the AQUILLA Z-159, registered as ZU-CFK, departed, the engine began to sputter and misfire. In response to the loss of power, the pilot executed a precautionary landing on the beach at Melkbos Strand. While the aircraft suffered substantial damage during the impact, the pilot escaped the incident without injury.
The investigation
Due to the nature of the event, no on-site investigation was conducted. The inquiry reviewed available documentation, which confirmed that the pilot held a valid license and medical certificate. Furthermore, records indicated that the aircraft had been maintained according to required standards. Meteorological reports at the time of the accident noted fine weather conditions.
Findings
- The engine malfunction was characterized by sputtering and misfiring immediately following takeoff.
- The primary factor contributing to the engine failure was the possibility that water or dirt contaminated the aircraft fuel.
