What happened
On 5 May 2002, a Victa Airtourer 115, registered ZS-VKA, was conducting a private scenic flight from Brakpan Airfield toward the Vaaldam area. The flight included the pilot and one passenger. The weather conditions at the time were favorable, characterized by clear skies, good visibility, and a light southerly wind of approximately 8 knots.
Upon returning to Brakpan Airfield for landing, the aircraft encountered a sudden gust of wind during the touchdown phase. This disturbance caused the pilot to lose directional control, leading the right-hand wing to strike the ground. The impact resulted in the structural failure of the right wing and caused the nose landing gear to be severed from the airframe. Despite the significant impact, there were 0 fatalities and 0 injuries as both occupants were able to exit the aircraft safely.
The investigation
Investigators examined the condition of the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the landing. The investigation confirmed that the pilot held a valid microlight license and was properly rated for the aircraft type. Regarding the mechanical state of the ZS-VKA, records indicated that the aircraft had been maintained according to requirements, with its most recent annual inspection completed on 10 February 2002.

- The impact with the ground caused extensive damage to the propeller, engine cowling, canopy, both wings, and the tail section.
- The aircraft was in a state of proper maintenance at the time of the event.
