What happened
On 25 July 2002, a Cessna 185, registered as ZS-EGC, was conducting a private flight from Potgietersrus Aerodrome to Brakpan Benoni Aerodrome. The flight was operated by a pilot with 256.3 total flying hours. While attempting to land on Runway 18, the aircraft encountered a 7-knot crosswind. During the landing sequence, a sudden gust of wind caused the pilot to lose directional control of the aircraft. As a result, the plane entered a ditch, leading to the collapse of the undercarriage and causing the propeller to strike the ground.

Meteorological data at the time indicated good visibility and a temperature of 22°C. There was no on-site investigation conducted for this occurrence. Records show the aircraft's last major inspection was completed in December 2001, with approximately 72 flight hours logged since that maintenance event.
