What happened
On 13 October 2002, a PA-28R-200, registration ZS-JOR, was involved in an accident during a private flight at Middelburg aerodrome. The pilot was conducting practice maneuvers for the purpose of renewing a Private Pilot License and Night Rating. After completing two circuits, the pilot initiated a third circuit. During the final approach to Runway 32, the aircraft encountered a significant crosswind. While attempting to maintain alignment with the runway centerline amidst the wind, the pilot failed to extend the landing gear before touchdown. Consequently, the aircraft landed with the undercarriage retracted, causing damage to the propeller and the lower fuselage.
The investigation
SACAA AIID investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the approach and the aircraft's mechanical state. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft's gear unsafe warning system was fully functional at the time of the incident. The pilot indicated that the intense concentration required to manage the aircraft during the high-wind approach likely prevented him from noticing the cockpit warning.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was the pilot's failure to lower the landing gear prior to touchdown.
- A strong crosswind during the final approach contributed to the pilot's difficulty in maintaining the runway centerline.
- The pilot's high level of concentration on directional control led to the neglect of the landing gear extension sequence.
- There were no injuries resulting from the event.
