What happened
On 18 November 2002, a Cessna 182J, registration ZS-NNU, was conducting a private flight from Pilanesberg to Grand Central. During the flight, the pilot encountered adverse weather conditions characterized by rain, overcast skies at 2,500 feet, and shifting winds of approximately 20 knots.
In response to the deteriorating weather, the pilot elected to divert to Lanseria for a precautionary landing on runway 24R. During the landing sequence, the aircraft experienced a heavy touchdown and subsequently bounced. Simultaneously, a powerful crosswind impacted the aircraft, causing the pilot to lose directional control. The aircraft eventually came to rest approximately 10 meters from the edge of the runway. There were no fatalities or injuries among the four occupants on board.
The investigation
The investigation examined the flight conditions, the pilot's credentials, and the maintenance status of the aircraft. The pilot held a valid license with the appropriate type rating and a valid medical certificate. Records indicated that the Cessna 182J had been maintained according to regulations, with only 12.5 hours logged since its last maintenance inspection. The investigation also noted that the aircraft sustained minor damage to the propeller and the nose landing gear following the excursion.
