Fatal Cessna 182Q Crash in Sigodiphola Village Following VFR into IMC

Casualties unknown • Sigodiphola village, north-west of Durban, ZA

A private flight ended in tragedy when a Cessna 182Q crashed into a residential hut near Durban, resulting in the death of the pilot.

What happened

On 3 November 2006, a Cessna 182Q, registration ZS-KOW, departed Virginia Aerodrome for a private flight destined for Ladysmith Aerodrome. During the flight, the pilot encountered deteriorating weather conditions. While flying via La Mercy, the pilot was contacted by the operator of La Mercy Flight Park, who warned that the inland hills were obscured by low cloud and advised against proceeding.

Despite receiving warnings from multiple sources—including a flight school instructor and a person on a telephone call earlier that day—the pilot continued the flight. As the aircraft moved toward the north-west of Durban, it encountered instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). The aircraft eventually descended vertically into a hut in Sigodiphola village. The impact and subsequent fire destroyed the aircraft and the structure, resulting in one fatality.

Probable cause

The pilot continued flying under visual flight rules (VFR) despite entering instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), which likely led to spatial disorientation and a subsequent spiral descent.
