What happened
On 27 December 2007, a private flight departed from Hermanus aerodrome, bound for Mossel Bay. The flight, involving a pilot and one passenger, proceeded without incident until the arrival phase. While attempting to land on runway 09 at Mossel Bay Aerodrome, the Autogyro Europe MT 03, registration ZU-EIC, struck the runway surface with excessive force.
This heavy impact caused the main rotor blades to strike the ground, leading the aircraft to roll onto its left side. The force of the impact caused the fuel tank to rupture, triggering an intense post-impact fire that consumed much of the airframe. Despite the fire, the pilot was able to evacuate and immediately assisted the passenger in escaping the burning wreckage. Both occupants sustained injuries, with the passenger receiving serious medical treatment at a local hospital.
The investigation
SACAA AIID investigators examined the wreckage and the circumstances surrounding the landing. Although the intense fire destroyed much of the airframe and melted several engine components, the investigation confirmed that the aircraft was intact at the moment of impact. Documentation showed that the aircraft had been maintained according to the approved schedule, with the most recent inspection completed in June 2007.
Meteorological data indicated that the weather was clear with good visibility, and therefore played no role in the accident. The investigation also confirmed that the pilot held a valid private license and medical certificate. There were no reported mechanical defects or serviceability issues prior to the flight.
