Microlight Crash at Leeuwenboschfontein Farm Results in Serious Injuries

Casualties unknown • Leeuwenboschfontein Farm, ZA

A Windlass Aquilla microlight aircraft struck a telephone pole and crashed into rocky terrain during a departure in the Western Cape, leaving both occupants seriously injured.

What happened

On 11 July 2008, a Windlass Aquilla microlight, registration ZU-CLN, was conducting a private flight from Morning Star Aerodrome toward Ladys.smith (FALY). During the journey, the aircraft landed at Leeuwenboschfontein Farm to refuel.

Upon departing Leeuwenboschfontein at approximately 1500Z, the aircraft climbed in a westerly direction. As the pilot attempted to execute a left-hand turn toward the intended destination, the aircraft failed to maintain sufficient altitude. The left main landing gear struck a telephone pole, causing the aircraft to crash into nearby rocky terrain. Both the pilot and the passenger sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The aircraft was destroyed in the impact.

The investigation

SACAA AIID investigators examined the wreckage and the operational conditions surrounding the departure. The investigation included a mechanical inspection of the Rotax 503 engine, which was subsequently tested and found to be functioning satisfactorily, ruling out engine failure as a contributing factor.

Investigators also analyzed the environmental conditions at the departure site. The landing strip at Leeuwenboschfontein is situated within a valley between hills. The investigation established that the combination of the airstrip's location and prevailing winds likely created rotor streams and turbulence, which hindered the aircraft's ability to gain necessary altitude during the maneuver.

Findings

  • The pilot held a valid microlight license and medical certificate at the time of the accident.
  • The ZU-CLN was properly maintained with a valid authority to fly.
  • The engine was in good working order and was not a factor in the accident.
  • The aircraft's inability to climb was exacerbated by turbulence and rotor streams caused by the valley topography.
  • The primary cause of the collision was the pilot's premature left-hand turn while the aircraft was struggling to gain altitude, leading to the impact with the power lines.

Probable cause

The pilot initiated a left turn too early after takeoff, which, combined with turbulence from the valley terrain, prevented the aircraft from clearing telephone poles.
