What happened
On 28 August 2010, a private flight involving a Liteflite Dragonfly, registration ZU-TUG, ended in a runway excursion at Grass roots aerodrome in KwaZulu-Natal. After completing several successful takeoffs and landings, the pilot attempted a fourth landing using a glide approach. During this maneuver, the aircraft stalled and struck the grass runway with significant force, resulting in a bounce.
In an attempt to recover, the pilot applied full power. This action caused the aircraft to veer sharply to the right, leading to a collision with a hangar. While the aircraft's left wing and front seat sustained substantial damage, the pilot escaped the wreckage without any injuries.
The investigation
SACAA AIID investigators examined the flight history, aircraft maintenance records, and environmental conditions at the time of the accident. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft was in a serviceable condition prior to the flight, with all maintenance performed by an approved person in accordance with regulations. The pilot held a valid microlight pilot license and a current medical certificate.
Meteorological data indicated clear skies with good visibility and light winds of 5-8 knots. The investigation found no evidence of mechanical malfunction or technical defects in the engine or airframe that could have contributed to the event.
