What happened
On 13 October 2010, a Ravin 500 aircraft, registration ZU-XML, was conducting a private flight from Wonderboom Aerodrome to Krugersdorp Aerodrome. During the final approach to runway 08, the pilot encountered significant wind activity, with surface winds recorded at 15 knots gusting to 25 knots.
As the aircraft was approximately two to three metres from the runway threshold, it was struck by a downdraft. In an attempt to manage the sudden change in airflow, the pilot reduced engine power. This maneuver resulted in the aircraft being forced onto the runway at a speed between 70 and 80 knots. Following touchdown, the pilot was unable to maintain directional control using the rudder. The aircraft subsequently rolled across the taxiway, where the left wing struck a fence pole and a hangar door extension, bringing the flight to a halt. The pilot sustained minor injuries.
The investigation
SACAA AIID examined the flight history, meteorological conditions, and the mechanical state of the aircraft. The investigation confirmed that the pilot held a valid commercial pilot's licence and that the aircraft was properly maintained, with a valid authority to fly. The investigation also reviewed the impact site, noting that the aircraft remained intact following the collision with the hangar door extension and the fence pole. The weather conditions, specifically the presence of wind shear and sudden vertical air movement, were scrutinized as part of the environmental context of the landing.
