What happened
On 24 September 2018, an Aeroprakt A-22LS departed Mountain Sanctuary Park Private Airfield for a local scenic flight. The flight, operated under Part 94 private regulations, proceeded without incident through the climb and cruise phases. However, during the final approach to the same airfield, the pilot encountered several dust devils—small, rotating whirlwinds—near the runway.
As the aircraft neared the ground, a sudden encounter with one of these vortices caused the aircraft to lift approximately 10 meters. In an attempt to prevent a stall or a bounce, the pilot applied power. Despite the turbulence, the pilot continued the landing attempt, believing there was sufficient runway remaining. During the touchdown, the aircraft lost directional stability; the tail swung to the left and the right wing dropped. The aircraft subsequently veered off the runway, striking a tree and causing the nose to impact the ground approximately 6 meters from the runway. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the Aeroprakt A-22LS.
The investigation
SACAA AIID investigators examined the flight history, meteorological conditions, and the mechanical state of the aircraft. The investigation confirmed that the pilot was experienced, with over 239 flight hours, the majority of which were on this specific type. The aircraft, registration ZU-FYZ, was found to be properly maintained with a valid Authority to Fly and a recent annual inspection.
Meteorological data at the time of the accident indicated light winds of approximately 3 knots and a temperature of 23°C. The investigation focused on the impact of the localized whirlwind phenomenon on the aircraft's flight path and the pilot's ability to maintain control during the landing phase.
