What happened
On the afternoon of 2 December 2019, a Scheibe SF25D Falke motor glider, registered ZS-UUA, was conducting a commercial scenic flight from Plettenberg Bay Aerodrome. The aircraft, operated by Garden Route Gliding, was on final approach to Runway 30 when it impacted the ground at the Plettenberg Bay Botanical Estate, approximately 270 metres before the runway threshold.
CCTV footage captured the aircraft flying level until the right wing suddenly dropped, followed by a steep nose-down pitch that continued until impact. The crash resulted in 2 fatalities, as both the pilot and the passenger succumbed to their injuries.
The investigation
SACAA AIID investigators examined the wreckage and reviewed surveillance footage and maintenance records. The investigation revealed significant discrepancies regarding the aircraft's weight and balance. Specifically, the cockpit load exceeded the maximum allowable limit by 46kg, and the aircraft was operating with a centre of gravity that was beyond the forward limit.
Furthermore, the investigation identified inaccuracies in the operator's approved Operations Manual, including incorrect maximum takeoff weights and fuel loads. The engine also showed evidence of unauthorized modifications to the cylinder heads, ignition system, and fuel pump.
