What happened
On 4 July 2005, a Scheibe SF28A motor glider, registration G-BARZ, was taxiing on Taxiway Alpha at Lydd Airport, Kent. The aircraft was in the process of preparing for takeoff from Runway 21 during a private flight. During the taxi maneuver, the right wing of the aircraft made contact with a post located on the right side of the taxiway. The impact resulted in a puncture to the plywood skin of the aircraft's outer wing.
The investigation
The investigation established that the taxiway was flanked by two posts situated in weeds approximately three feet high. One post supported a sign, while the second post was lying on the ground. The contact occurred as the aircraft passed the post. An airport fire officer, who was present at the airfield at the time, noted that the signage posts were due for replacement. Furthermore, it was noted that taxiing procedures at the airport were undergoing review.
