What happened
On 18 August 2012, a Shadow Series CD Shadow, registration G-MZBN, was conducting a private solo flight in favorable weather conditions. The pilot had been performing various maneuvers, including left and right turns, near Northrepps Airfield in Norfolk. During the return leg to the airfield, the engine ceased operation.
Observing that the fuel gauge indicated only one-quarter of the tank remained, the pilot opted to land at the nearest available site. The pilot selected a field containing a standing crop of potatoes for the emergency touchdown. Upon landing, the aircraft came to an abrupt halt. The impact caused the nosewheel to detach and resulted in damage to the front pod and the radio antenna. The pilot, who was wearing a full harness, sustained no injuries.
The investigation
Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the engine failure and the subsequent landing. The investigation focused on the fuel state and the sequence of maneuvers performed prior to the loss of power. The pilot reported that the engine stopped while returning to the airfield following practice turns.
Findings
- The engine failure was likely caused by low fuel quantity being introduced into the fuel system during the preceding left and right turns.
- The pilot's decision to land in a potato field was based on the low fuel level and the intention to land into the wind at the nearest suitable location.
