What happened
An instrument flight rules flight was traveling from Vernon Airport, British Columbia, toward Westlock Aerodrome, Alberta, with a planned stop at Calgary/Springbank Airport to collect additional travelers. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was operated with one pilot and three passengers on board.
During the landing sequence on Runway 28 at Westlock Aerodrome, the aircraft bounced upon contact with the surface. In response to this, the pilot attempted a go-around procedure. As power was applied to the engines to initiate the climb, the aircraft experienced a left roll and struck the runway in an inverted position. The wreckage eventually came to a stop on the southern side of the runway.
Following the impact, the three passengers were able to exit the cabin through the main door with help from bystanders. The incident resulted in one serious injury and two minor injuries among the passengers. The pilot sustained serious injuries and remained trapped within the cockpit for roughly two hours before rescue teams could extract him from the debris. An emergency locator transmitter signal was successfully detected by the search and rescue satellite system. The aircraft sustained significant damage, though no fire occurred after the impact.
Findings
- The aircraft rolled to the left during the transition to a go-around.
- The accident occurred immediately following an engine power application following a runway bounce.
