What happened
On 4 April 2010, a Streak Shadow SA, registration G-WYAT, was conducting a private flight at Oban Airport in Scotland. The weather conditions were characterized by clear visibility and a wind of 11 knots originating from 220°.
After completing several circuits using the aircraft's main landing gear, the pilot attempted to practice short field landings on Runway 19. During the initial approach, the pilot encountered windshear and responded by applying full engine power to execute a go-around. On a subsequent approach, the aircraft encountered windshear in the same location. This time, the pilot could not sufficiently manage the rate of descent, resulting in a heavy landing.
Following the landing, the pilot taxied the aircraft to a hangar, where damage to the main boom near the wing trailing edge was identified. The pilot, who was wearing a four-point harness, escaped the incident with no injuries.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. Investigators examined the sequence of the two approaches and the pilot's response to the windshear encountered during the flight operations.
