What happened
On August 5, 2015, at approximately 10:40 local time, a Kitfox 7 aircraft, registered as HB-YMG, was involved in a fatal accident near Hundwil, Switzerland. The aircraft, which was being operated privately under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), departed from Lommis airfield (LSZT) for a flight intended to return to the same location. During the flight, the aircraft crashed into a forest area located roughly 550 meters west of Hundwil. The impact resulted in the destruction of the aircraft and the deaths of both the pilot and the passenger. Additionally, the accident caused environmental damage due to fuel leakage into the soil.
The investigation
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) conducted an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The investigation focused on the flight path, the aircraft's condition, and the sequence of events leading to the impact in the wooded area. The investigation also addressed the secondary impact of the crash, specifically the contamination of the ground caused by spilled aviation fuel.
