What happened
On July 17, 2014, at approximately 13:30 local time, a private Kitfox IV-1200 Speed, registered HB-YGM, was performing a takeoff from the asphalt runway 10 at Ecuvillens (LSGE). During the takeoff roll, the aircraft encountered a crosswind component, which caused the plane to deviate from the runway centerline. As the aircraft exited the paved surface, the left wheel struck a runway light beacon. This impact triggered a ground loop, causing the aircraft to spin before finally coming to rest in the adjacent grassy field.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the departure from Ecuvillens. Investigators examined the aircraft's movement during the takeoff phase and the impact with airfield infrastructure. The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, remained uninjured following the incident. The aircraft sustained damage including a cracked right-wheel fairing, and the runway light itself was damaged during the excursion.
