What happened
On September 26, 2014, a private Cessna 172, registration D-EVZZ, was operating a VFR flight from Augsburg to Wangen-Lachen. While joining the traffic pattern for an approach to runway 08, the pilot initiated a go-around because another aircraft had not yet vacated the runway.
During the subsequent procedure, the pilot conducted a downwind leg at an altitude of 2500 ft QNH but transitioned into the final approach too early. The aircraft approached runway 08 with full flaps extended at an estimated speed of 77 knots. The aircraft touched down approximately 150 meters past the runway threshold. Due to the late touchdown, the pilot was unable to decelerate the aircraft within the remaining runway length. The aircraft subsequently overran the end of the runway and came to a stop on the adjacent soft ground.
One person, the pilot, sustained significant injuries.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the sequence of maneuvers following the initial missed approach. Investigators established that the aircraft's touchdown point was significantly past the threshold, which left insufficient distance for braking. The investigation also noted damage to the aircraft, including a collapsed nose wheel, damage to the leading edge of the left wing, and propeller damage.
Findings
- The pilot performed an early turn from the downwind leg into the final approach.
- The touchdown occurred approximately 150 meters beyond the runway threshold.
- The aircraft was unable to stop before exiting the paved surface.
