What happened
On 2 July 2021, at approximately 07:47 UTC, a runway incursion took place at Geneva Airport (LSGG). An Airbus A320-214, operated by EasyJet Switzerland SA under registration HB-JXI, was in the middle of its takeoff roll on runway 2/20. During this critical phase of flight, a Learjet LJ40 with registration CS-TFO, operated by OMNI – Aviação eTecnologia, S.A., entered the protected area of runway 22 at taxiway Y2. This unauthorized presence of the business jet within the runway's safety zone created a serious airprox situation involving the departing commercial airliner.
The investigation
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (STSB) initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the presence of the Learjet on the active runway. The inquiry focused on the movements of both aircraft, the coordination between the flight crews and air traffic control, and the specific location of the CS-TFO relative to the takeoff path of the HB-JXI at the time of the encounter.
