What happened
On December 24, 2014, at approximately 15:58 local time, an MCR4S aircraft, registered as F-PUDI, was performing a private VFR landing at Biel Airport (LSZP). During the landing phase, the aircraft failed to stop within the runway limits and overran the end of the pavement.
The incident resulted in one person being seriously injured (the pilot), while one passenger sustained light or no injuries. The aircraft sustained damage to its nose gear fairing, but no third-party property was affected.
The investigation
Because this was a summary report, the investigation was based on available statements rather than a full-scale inquiry. The pilot provided information regarding the circumstances leading to the excursion. The investigation established that the aircraft was being operated under private flight rules and that the pilot was experienced, with a total of 350 hours and 41 minutes of flight time.
Findings
Data from the pilot indicates that the primary cause of the runway overrun was excessive approach speed. The pilot stated that the aircraft was flown too fast during the landing sequence, which prevented the aircraft from coming to a complete stop before the end of the runway.
