What happened
On May 8, 2021, at approximately 14:20 local time, a Lancair International, INC. Legacy 2000, registered as HB-YMS, was involved in a fatal aviation accident in the Canton of Solothurn. The aircraft, operated for private purposes, was performing a flight under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) in a circuit pattern, departing from and returning to Grenchen Airport (LSZG).
During the flight, the aircraft descended from a low altitude and struck a meadow in the vicinity of Oberramsern. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. There were two fatalities recorded, involving both the pilot and the single passenger on board. No third-party injuries were reported, though the accident caused minor damage to property on the ground.
The investigation
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The investigation focused on the flight path, the aircraft's condition at the time of the accident, and the sequence of events leading to the impact in the field.
