What happened
On September 8, 2016, at approximately 09:52 local time, an experimental Europa Classic, registration HB-YJF, was performing a takeoff from Grenchen Airport (LSZG) under visual flight rules. During the initial climb, at an altitude of roughly 120 meters above ground level, the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of engine power.
Following the failure, the pilot attempted an approach to the southern "red" runway. This approach was conducted in the opposite direction of the intended landing, facing a tailwind, and at an excessive airspeed. To prevent the aircraft from striking bushes and a stream located at the eastern end of the runway, the pilot intentionally steered the aircraft into a plowed field situated south of the runway.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the sequence of events leading to the forced landing and the subsequent impact. Investigators established that the aircraft sustained light damage, primarily consisting of minor paint scrapes that did not compromise the structural integrity of the airframe. However, the propeller sustained damage after making contact with the ground during the landing maneuver. No injuries were reported among the crew or any third parties, though one person on board was noted as lightly injured.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was a sudden loss of engine power during the takeoff and climb phase.
- The landing approach was characterized by an incorrect direction of arrival, a tailwind component, and an approach speed that was too high.
- The pilot's decision to land in a plowed field was a deliberate maneuver to avoid obstacles, specifically bushes and a stream.
