What happened
On July 15, 2019, at approximately 17:00 local time, a Kamov Ka-32A11BC helicopter, registered as HB-XOL, was performing a training flight under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). The aircraft, operated by Heliswiss International AG, was conducting a landing sequence at the Haltikon Heliport (LSXN) in Switzerland.
During the landing phase, the downward airflow generated by the helicopter's rotors interacted with a nearby truck parked opposite the heliport. A truck driver, who was positioned on the flatbed of the vehicle, was struck by the intense rotor downwash. The force of the air caused the individual to be blown off the truck and fall to the ground, resulting in serious injuries.
The investigation
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) conducted an inquiry into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the injury. The investigation focused on the positioning of personnel near the landing area and the impact of aerodynamic forces during the approach and touchdown of the Kamov Ka-32A11BC.
Findings
- The primary cause of the injury was the force of the rotor downwash produced by the helicopter during its landing maneuver.
- The driver was located on the loading platform of a truck situated directly across from the heliport.
- The aircraft itself sustained no damage during the event.
