A commercial flight operating from Milan Linate to Saint Tropez was forced to divert to Genoa after smoke and an acidic odor were detected in the cabin.

What happened

On 21 June 2024, a Pilatus Aircraft Ltd., PC-12/47E aircraft, registered OH-DBM, was conducting a commercial flight under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) from Milano Linate to Saint Tropez La Môle. While the aircraft was in the cruise phase of the flight, the occupants noticed the presence of white and grey smoke within the cabin, accompanied by an acidic odor.

In response to the smoke, the crew donned oxygen masks and immediately initiated an emergency descent. The pilots declared an emergency and diverted the flight to Genoa Airport. The aircraft landed safely in Genoa approximately eight minutes after the smoke was first detected. Following the landing, the crew performed an emergency shutdown and evacuated the aircraft. There were no injuries among the two crew members and five passengers on board.

The investigation

Following the incident, the National Agency for Flight Safety (ANSV) in Italy opened an investigation into the event to determine the origin of the smoke and the cause of the odor.
