What happened
On 21 January 2025, at approximately 13:45 local time, a Pilatus PC-6/B2-H4 aircraft, registered as HB-FDU, was performing an approach to Maripasoula Airport (SOOA) in French Guiana. The aircraft, operated by Yankee Lima Suisse SA, was flying from Félix Éboué Airport (SOCA) when it encountered difficulties during the final stages of its descent. While on short final, the pilot lost control of the aircraft, leading to a collision with the ground. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft.
The investigation
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) was notified of the accident involving the Swiss-registered aircraft. Because the occurrence took place in a French overseas territory, the French Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses pour la sécurité de l’aviation civile (BEA) is conducting the primary investigation. The available information confirms that the pilot sustained serious injuries during the event, while no passengers or third parties were involved in the accident.
Findings
Preliminary findings indicate that the primary cause of the accident was a loss of control during the short final phase of the landing sequence. The aircraft struck the ground before it could complete the landing at Maripasoula Airport.
